Introductions

Who Am I?

My name is Cole Newcomer and I am a double major here at UAF, pursuing a degree in both the arts and computer science. I have spent 8 years out of the country, living in Rwanda for roughly four years, Ecuador for three, and Italy for about four months. Primarily my main hobby is board games and card games, and that is not to say the classics like monopoly or risk. Beyond that art is largely what I spend my leisure time doing.

A Piece of Art I Find Interesting

This is a mug from Mike Cinelli, one of my favorite ceramic artists for the immersive quality to his work. I find ceramic work that imitates other mediums fascinating and hope to explore that more in my own work. Here is a link to Mike Cinelli's Companion Gallery show.

My Relationship to Art

My concentration for my degree in art is focused in ceramics and I find most mediums fascinating and I have dipped my toes into many. Art had always been a nebulous term in my life ranging between many things, most of which I enjoyed doing, though I never really considered it a possibility to fully pursue until I was recommended to pursue a degree. My love for ceramics however began in the end of the eighth grade when I was first put into public school after years of homeschooling. I found the permanence and three dimensional medium fascinating and I continued to pursue it all through high school, enrolling in every class I could and then becoming a TA for the class. I also achieved the Juror's Choice Award at the High School Superintendent Art Show, a statewide show in Washington. I am now in my second year here at UAF and I am currently enrolled in the ceramics materials class and metalsmithing with a passion to learn the innerworkings and mechanics of the ceramic process and exploring a new medium of metal work.

  2. That's an awesome mug! Thanks for sharing Cinelli's works. I had a friend that made a full-time living with her ceramics - Liz Berry. She has since passed away, but her daughter-in-law has kept the family tradition alive and still has her wood fired kiln. Hey- I love tabletop games, too. There is some great art to be found in games. You don't hear about starving artists too much any more. Plenty of work to go around.

  3. Ooh that is a really cool mug! What a mix of majors you have! It sounds like a great balance. I checked out his gallery and the ceramics are really interesting. I just took some classes making pottery and it's such a creative process and so enjoyable, especially having a beautiful, finished product from your own work. Do you have a favorite board game?

    1. It's hard to choose just one, but if I had to I'd probably choose Cuenca in Ecuador. It's a beautiful city and extremely walkable.
